Figs are first mentioned in the Bible in the beginning chapters of Genesis (3:7), when Adam and Eve covered their nakedness with fig leaves. The Torah itself is compared to a fig tree, because all parts of the fig fruit are edible. During King Solomon’s reign, all of Israel lived in safety “under his fig tree” I Kings (4:25), which indicates not only national prosperity, but also demonstrates how, in the Biblical tradition, the fig tree stands as a symbol for peace and tranquility.
